Qualcomm To Demonstrate It’s New Ultrasound-Based Pen Technology At CES

When we talk about Qualcomm, only one thing comes to mind – mobile processors. But what most of us didn’t know is they do non-chip products too. Remember when they surprised us with their toq smartwatch?

And now Qualcomm has revealed that they are exploring even deeper as they are now trying to make their own brand of pen/stylus technology. And their idea of a new pen technology? A pen that is sensitive to ultrasounds.

Looking at the short demonstration below, it highlighted that it doesn’t require the restricted use of the stylus on the tablet, meaning you could use a regular pen to draw on a piece of paper next to the tablet, and the microphone inside the tablet will pick up that sound, and then the chip will process what it’s hearing into whatever you were drawing on the tablet. This most likely needs apps to be compatible with this method, though, so when Qualcomm will be unveiling this technology at CES in a few days, they’ll probably announce that they will have an SDK for it too.

What do you think of this new technology? Do you see this “ultrasound” feature as useful or just gimmicky? Let us know in the comments below.
